NUKA HIVA TRADING NEWS UPDATE:

Prices:

Over the years, Nuka Hiva has tried to maintain fair market prices (both for customers and growers). However, in that prices have risen dramatically in certain areas of the Pacific, we have no alternative but to adjust our prices upward for some Pacific material, and for certain Hawaiian varieties. Furthermore, in Hawaii scarcity has become a factor.
Our updated prices appear on our Kava Products page.

Continuity:
The good news is that Vanuatu is producing and exporting superlative material, and we can maintain our current prices on this for the time being. We urge you to try our Vanuatu Borogu - it's exactly what kava should be.

New Product:
We a have an entirely new product that we would like to introduce. It is in place of the kava extract powder that we will no longer be offering. We now have Certified Vegetarian liquid kava capsules containing 200 mg of pure Vanuatu kava extract with 75 mg kavalactone per serving.. One capsule per serving. We've sent out trial samples to some of our old customers and the response has been very positive, not only easy to use but with all the qualities and effects of traditionally brewed island kava. Big city stressed? You might want to try this, a very convenient and potent product that will smooth the edge of the roughest of days. Check them out!.

New choices:
We now carry two varieties of kava from Tonga. Apart from the famous white kava (HineHina) that Tonga is renowned for and that we have carried for some years, we have recently added a different variety (Fu'u) is a more robust, darker kava. Rather than try and describe the subtle but meaningful differences between the two, we suggest you buy 1/2 lb of each and check them out for yourself. $18.00 a half lb. If you are already an aficionado of our white Tongan kava, chances are you will love Fu'u as well.

We now carry two varieties of Papua New Guinea kava.
Madang short and Madang Long.

Two excellent varieties of the most potent PNG kavas available. Our Madang Short is 100% lateral root while the Madang Long is 75% lateral. If you already like PNG kava then you will almost certainly appreciate either of these two types; both are pungent, potent and powerfully soothing. If you would like to compare both, try ordering a half pound of each.

And last but by no means means least:

I've noticed over the years that a lot of kava companies like to include photographs of the founder/president in heroic or romantic poses. Not wishing to be left behind, we have finally bowed to public demand and have included a photograph our esteemed President in an earlier life. Which of these four individuals in this photograph is the controlling force (the massive brain) that drives Nuka Hiva to dominance in the world of Kava. Can you guess? The guy leaning on the lamp pole, King Kong or .....The first 20 correct answers (one per family) will receive free (FREE I tell you) a four oz sample of our very best Hawaiian kava.

Good luck and much Aloha from John and Rebecca at Nuka Hiva!

ABOUT KAVA
Socially, kava is taken to induce relaxation, calm and pacify the soul, stimulate the imagination and inspire thought.  Pacific Islanders have long recognized kava's healing and painkilling qualities, and use it to treat aching muscles, upset stomachs as well as many other afflictions.

We take great pleasure in being able to offer a number of excellent kava varieties from Hawaii and elsewhere in the Pacific. All of our kava root is minimum three years of age, and is sun dried and processed (apart from grinding) entirely by hand. Our average lateral to stump ratio is approximately 70% to 30%, our kavalactone content ranges from 12.5  to 18%. We are able to supply both traditional coarse grind and superfine kava powder suitable for encapsulation and instant mixing. Whatever kava powder you choose from our list, we guarantee your pleasure and satisfaction.

Nuka Hiva Trading donates 5% of net profits to Company 10 Bravo, Wa'a Wa'a Volunteer Fire Company on the Big Island of Hawaii.

NOTE: Methyl Bromide (Bromomethane) Commonly used to fumigate unmilled kava root from the Pacific Islands. The production, use and importation of this colorless gas has been banned in the U.S. Since 2005, following the enactment of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Critical use exemptions have been made for this product, one being its use in the fumigation of imported food products. However, due to the fact that it is a recognized ozone-depleting chemical and a potential developmental toxicant Nuka Hiva Trading does not import, use or sell any kava product that has been treated with this chemical compound.

Solomon Islands Kava:
A fairly dark, earthy smelling powder with a very nice "laid back" effect. Although somewhat peppery, the taste is quite clean with no bitter overtones. It makes a potent but quiate palatable brew. Take it with friends when a quiet evening of conversation is planned. This kava was very popular when we had it in stock some years ago.
$35 per lb.

Tongan Kava: From the Island of Eua (HineHina and Fu'u varieties)
This is the perfect kava for a quiet conversational evening with friends. Quite potent, with a agreeable mild “kava” taste and pleasant earthy aroma, this kava will help make “talk story” time flow while it relaxes both the mind and the body and slows the world to “Island” time. Please specify variety: "Fu-u" in Comments field, otherwise you will get HineHina.

Kava from Papua-New Guinea (PNG)Madang short and Madang Long Varieties
We are fortunate to carry potent, high quality  wildcrafted kava from Madang Province on the north coast of Papua-New Guinea.  Known in Bislama (a local patois) as "Waeld Koniak" after the famous French brandy, PNG kava is truly one of the unique kavas of the Pacific.

Carefully wildcrafted from ancient stands growing in the rich red clay soils of coastal New Guinea, the root of this plant has developed, in its pristine isolation, a character and flavor that sets it apart from all others. Like the soil in which it grows, the root is orange/red in color.  Taste is pungent and peppery, with a hint of ginger.

With a documented kavalactone content between 16 and 18 percent, this kava heightens the senses in a spiritual and relaxing manner.   We sell only lateral root, ground to  coarse (traditional), fine, or super-fine powder.

Please specify variety in the Comments field at bottom.

Papua-New Guinea (PNG) ROOTLETS – Out of Stock – Hiwa and Isa rootlets available.
We also sell it "au natural" as it comes from New Guinea: small, short rootlets that can be easily chewed. This is perhaps my personal favorite, it smoothes the raw edges of the roughest of days.
$32 per lb.

Isa (also known as "Tudei")
"Isa" is a variety of very potent kava originally from the island of Papua-New Guinea. Introduced to the Big Island of Hawaii approximately ten years ago "Isa" quickly adapted and thrived in its new home. Like many other newcomers to the Big Island, "Isa" has undergone a number of subtle changes; although still extremely potent, locally grown "Isa" has mellowed considerably over the years, developing characteristics that are uniquely Hawaiian. It has lost much of the strong taste and heady pungency associated with imported PNG kava and instead has developed a character closer to those of our native varieties.

Please be careful, "Isa" is very potent -  don't even think about driving or operating equipment. "Isa" can be quite long lasting, please take this into account while enjoying this excellent variety.

Vanuatu Borogo:
In our endeavour to continuously upgrade and bring you kava varieties from all of the islands of the Pacific, we are happy to announce that we now have Borogo from the island of Pentecost, in Vanuatu. This is the home of the original land divers. Never mind bungee cords and all that nonsense, I've seen these guys jump off a 120 foot tower with vines wrapped around their ankles. I've done it myself (but from a much lower level).

This the true Pentecost kava! You might not want to jump off a leaning tower with vines around your ankles but it sure will put you in touch with your inner self.

Generally described by many as a very mellow and almost sweet tasting quaff.

Kavalactones?
All of our root is between 12.5 and 18% which means that all are relatively potent. Perhaps more important is the kavalactone profile: every type has a different profile and what suits you is a matter of personal taste arrived at by trial and error.
